Portland is still Portland

It seems that the left-leaning east coast news media has lost interest in what is happening in Portland Oregon.  The city is now in the 70th … 71st…. 72nd … ???  …    Well whatever day it is, the rioters in Portland have shown a great deal of tenacity.  They are still vandalizing, damaging, burning and attacking police.

Rather than admit the no longer deniable -- that these street thugs are nothing more than anti-social, anti-American malcontents.  And so, the media prefers to virtually cease their frequent reports on the situation in Portland.

The media can no longer pretend that those taking to the streets are protesters or demonstrators.  They are rioters and common criminals taking advantage of reduced police enforcement.  The media mavens can no longer sell their highly spun narratives that the unrest in Portland is in response to the killing of George Floyd – or that it rises from America’s alleged pandemic systemic racism (which I have exposed as false in many a commentary).  Yes, there is isolated racism, but definitely not a characteristic of the general public of any background.

The obvious had become so obvious that even Portland’s radical Mayor Ted Wheeler is changing his rhetoric.  You may recall how he incited public disdain for law enforcement by demanding that federal officers be removed from their duty to protect federal property.

Wheeler even joined the ranks of the rioters attacking federal police and property.  He, along with the rabble, got tear gassed – a non-lethal means of dispersing rioters.

Having run out of excuses and rationalizations for the violent actions of the mob, Wheeler has had a bit of a change of heart.  Responding to an attempt by rioters to burn – not a federal building – but a local police headquarters (pictured above). Wheeler suddenly found his law-and-order persona.

He said, “When you commit arson with an accelerant in an attempt to burn down a building that is occupied by people who you have intentionally trapped inside, you are not demonstrating, you are attempting to commit murder.”

While most of the peaceful demonstrators who took to the streets after the killing of Floyd have gone back home, those on the left -- who were only piggybacking on the legitimate protests -- are still at it.  The “Justice for Floyd” signs have mostly disappeared.  In their place are the “defund police” placards and a range of anti-American anarchist signs.

Perhaps the problem would not be so bad if Portland were some political outlier.  But it is just a prime example of the growing threat to a civilized nation in which political differences are settled in the polling places – or even in the courts.  The threat to the Republic is the growing influence of those who want to rule from the streets – and the politicians who use them to gain political power.

So, there ‘tis.
